Business Analytics isn’t exactly a new field, but there is much about it that isn’t known to those just starting out. When data analytics started slowly rising in popularity – and the reliance on machine learning and deep learning algorithms increased – its ease of use in other fields also gradually increased. Business analytics is not a separate function from data analytics overall, but there is a lot of difference in terms of scope.
Business Analytics has a key focus on driving business decisions through the insight that can be acquired by combing through massive amounts of data about all the various aspects of any organisation. On the other hand, Data Analysis can be restricted to a specific function of a business – and is especially popular in services startups where they perform outsourced work for their clients. Business Analytics is more common for organisations who need insights on how their company is functioning overall.
Types of Business Analytics Jobs – and how to get them
If you’re interested in Business data analyst job, it’s also highly likely that you have a basic understanding of the types of jobs available as a business analyst. Still, it’s in everybody’s best interest to do a bit of a shallow dive into this topic – after all, there are too many new jobs being created every year, and it’s possible you may not already know about some of these jobs!

Business Analytics Programs from Top Universities
Core Business Analysts
If you get hired as a Core Business Analyst at any company, your primary role of business analyst will be to handle the overall functioning of the business – and all the associated data. These are people whose job it is to oversee all types and forms of data, including how much money the business is making or losing, what it is projected to make or lose, and the avenues through which more money-making opportunities can increase. In addition to this, it’s also a role that centres around competitors and their data – like, for example, what kind of business decisions are they making and the possible reasons behind these moves.
To get this job, the most common learning pathways are through BAs in Economics, Finance, or Business. If you have a Master’s degree, even better! But usually, nothing more than this will be required for this particular position. However, if you haven’t had a chance to get one of these degrees but would still want this job, you can upskill yourself through online learning – as long as you can prove your worth through practical projects, companies will always be looking to hire you!
Tech Business Analyst
If you’re considering becoming a business analyst and have a deep fascination with all things tech, then this could be the best career role for you. A Business Analyst’s role is to make sure that the business aspect of things can be understood so that sound decisions can be made on it, keeping in mind the company’s long-term growth. However, when it comes to the tech side of things – such as what tools will be required to make this happen, what kind of technology should be invested in, as well as how is the adoption likely to pan out – these are all within the ambit of an IT business analyst.
A key area of work for IT Business Analysts is automation – for them, their incentives are primarily structured in a way that rewards making things as streamlined as possible. While they don’t often take part in conversations with stakeholders regarding which moves to make (typically a role for the Core Business Analyst), they actively push for specific software to be considered for company-wide adoption.
To be considered for this role of business analyst, you don’t need more than you would for a Core Business Analyst since these are parallel on the hierarchy, and one is not above the other. Typically, people who join the role of an IT Business Analyst have foundational level degrees in Computer Science, Engineering, or Technical Writing.
Systems Analyst
A systems analyst has a very interesting role in the entirety of analysis operations. They come into the scene once the job of the Core Business Analyst and the IT Business Analyst is done. Systems analysts take care of the ideas they suggest and ensure that their suggestions can be implemented realistically. So, to make this happen, the Systems Analyst looks after all their requirements across all levels and ensures that there are no glitches.
One thing to keep in mind about being a Systems Analyst is that they are typically much more aware of technical languages concerning data – such as JSON and XML, to name a few – and there is a lot more gruelling backend work to be done here than in the other roles. By definition, since this role is more squarely focused on overall systems and how they work, anyone who takes up this job needs to be comfortable deep-diving into data. They must also have a way to translate this data for the rest of the organisation.
Ultimately, they need to be at the cusp of highly technical information and translate it in ways comprehensible to tech and non-tech staff. Thus, they translate business requirements into functional targets which can be met. Typically, Systems Analysts have a background in IT skills – so they are usually engineers, coders, data scientists with a keen interest in working with data at scale.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. Is Business Analyst a safe career path?
We are currently going through what can be moderately called “the golden age of Data”. As somebody who will primarily be working with data, there is absolutely no doubt about the fact that your services will be beneficial to any company - as long as you know what you’re doing and are confident about it, of course! However, you must also consider how you’ll adapt to the industry itself - there will be new things happening all the time, and if you’re on top of industry changes, it’s more likely that you’ll find lucrative opportunities. So, while it’s a lucrative career path, you must be ready to upskill continuously.
2. Will a Business Analytics course provide me with the necessary tools to get a good job in the field?
upGrad’s Global Master in Business Analytics certificate is one of many courses you can take to push your career forward. In terms of the tools you’ll acquire, you’ll very clearly have live industry projects that will translate into a level of experience that others - who are new to the field - will not have. However, the complete answer will depend on what kind of job opportunity will be ideal for you - and depending on the organisational context, you may want to further narrow down on a specific skill set to achieve those goals.
3. What kind of background do I need to become a Business Analyst?
If you’re considering upskilling your career, you don’t need to have any specific background at all! As long as you’re curious to learn and explore new and diverse areas of knowledge, your online courses should cover all the necessary bases, including what will work best for you as a business analyst. As for the rest, you may have to do some extra learning on your own - and that should work out just fine too! So, there’s no specific background required to be a business analyst.
