Describe a City That You Think Is Very Interesting- IELTS Cue Card

The IELTS Speaking test is divided into three parts – introduction, individual long run (cue card), and follow-up discussion. In the IELTS Speaking Part 2, the examiner provides you with a certain topic/task card, and you must speak on it for up to two minutes. This article discusses a commonly asked IELTS speaking topic: 'Describe a city that you think is very interesting.' Always remember you should add personal opinions and anecdotes to make your essay more interesting for the examiner. You will get one minute to prepare for the topic.

Describe a City You Think is Very Interesting: Sample Answer 1

The topic seeks a description of a city that I find interesting. In this context, I will take the name of New Delhi above all else. While I have not had the fortune to reside in the capital, I find it a fascinating city. I first visited Delhi when I was sixteen to visit my maternal aunt, uncle, and cousins. After that, I visited Delhi on a business trip, much later, at the age of thirty. Both visits helped me to witness the different facets of the city.

I admire the well-planned layout of Delhi and the wide roads with plenty of greenery. The lovely trees arching over the streets create a spectacular ambience while one is driving around. I love the entire Lutyens Zone and Lodi Garden, beautiful green areas with local flora and fauna. I also love the bustling Connaught Place, which has everything a connoisseur could want. Old Delhi also has its own charm with the Jama Masjid and Karim’s lip-smacking kebabs. 

Delhi is full of history and culture at every corner. I love everything I have witnessed, from the historic Red Fort to Parliament House. The city has a true soul of its own, and the people are warm and generous. There is something about how Delhi looks during a spell of rainfall with the picture-perfect vistas. There is also something about the charming winters where one has to venture outdoors. Delhi is interesting, with its mixture of traditions and cosmopolitanism. I wish to settle in Delhi someday if I am lucky enough.

Describe a City You Think is Very Interesting: Sample Answer 2

I have visited many cities in my lifetime, and I must say that Mumbai takes the crown. While I do not live in India’s financial capital, I have explored the city multiple times since my maternal grandparents are based there. The city became my go-to option during my summer and winter vacations. What I like most about the city is its unbridled sense of being, overcoming adversity, and indomitable spirit. For a city that has been bombed, destroyed, and besieged multiple times while facing nature’s wrath periodically, you will find the personalities of its inhabitants fascinating. 

In a city where poverty and glamor exist cheek-by-jowl, you will find the most unique of cultural nuances almost everywhere. Mumbai never fails to dazzle me with its graffiti and street art, charming cafes, vibrant markets, packed movie theaters, buzzing studios, overflowing local trains, mega skyscrapers and more. Interestingly, a megapolis as congested as Mumbai has a live and sprawling forest (Goregaon-Aarey stretch) within its heart. It is as beautiful as can be. It has hills surrounding some parts of it. 

And, of course, it is beautifully defined by the Arabian Sea. The sea is a predominant motif of Mumbai. The coastlines are mesmerizing and magical. They are as much a part of daily relaxation as ubiquitous romance. 

Sprinkle some music, Bollywood, business, art, and delicious food – you get a potpourri that is Mumbai. I would go so far as to call it India’s most fantastic city, an island paradise that teaches you to dream. It is this aspect of Mumbai that I find most interesting.
