Recently, one of my colleagues took the IELTS test. While she scored well in other sections, the lack was majorly in the IELTS Speaking Test. This was mainly due to the Cue Card task which left her a bit taken aback as to what she should include in her answer. Let us see how you can avoid the mistake she made and sail through the IELTS Speaking Test.

The use of cue cards is a crucial component of the IELTS Speaking Test as it assesses a candidate's ability to express their ideas coherently and fluently. Performing well on the cue card task can significantly impact the overall Speaking Test score, which is imperative for achieving a desirable IELTS score.

Upon receiving the cue card, the candidate is given one to two minutes to discuss the topic and may take notes to help structure their response. In the IELTS Speaking Test "Describe a popular/well-known person in your country" IELTS Cue Card is very common. Let’s check out the best way to answer it.

How to Describe Well-Known Person in Your Country for IELTS

What I learned from my colleague’s experience is that when approaching the ‘describe a famous person in your country’ cue card task, you must focus on three major aspects:

  • Structuring your response logically
  • Language and expressions to use for a compelling description
  • Vocabulary you are using to describe the person

Structuring your response

Structuring your response is crucial for coherence and clarity. Follow these tips to describe a popular person in your country:

1) Begin your speech with an opening line, often known as the background of the topic at hand. Then, one by one, deliver your sentences discussing the various points of the issue.

2) Make sure to employ connectors, such as firstly, secondly, ultimately, moreover, in addition, also, along with it, etc. These connectors connect the sentences for a seamless transition. Also, use examples whenever you can. You can include:

  • Provide background information: Talk about a person's history, upbringing, education, and early career.
  • Highlight achievements: Discuss the individual's accomplishments, honors, recognitions, and contributions to their profession or society.
  • Describe the personality traits: Use descriptive words to convey the individual's personality, character characteristics, strengths, and limitations.

3) Finally, rather than abruptly ending your sentence, provide a flowing conclusion that summarizes your response. When closing the description of a popular person cue card expression, you can further communicate your emotions about the topic, giving your conclusion a deeper significance.

Language and expressions for a compelling description

To make your description compelling, use a variety of language and expressions:

  • Adjectives: Use descriptive adjectives to portray the person's qualities.
For example: visionary, inspirational, innovative, "dedicated," and "resilient."
  • Adverbs: Incorporate adverbs to describe actions or achievements.
For instance: She tirelessly campaigned for social justice.
    He successfully pioneered groundbreaking research.
