oral communication is better than written communication IELTS answer

International English Language Test System (IELTS) is a famous test designed for students who want to study, migrate or work abroad. Here is your guide to the topic- Oral communication is better than written communication for the IELTS essay. This essay will require delving deeper into the essence of the topic: why oral communication is considered a better option. At the same time, you will also have to maintain the logical flow of thoughts while writing the essay. Here are samples that you can use as references.

Oral Communication is Better than Written Communication: Sample 1

Is oral communication better than written communication? I believe oral communication is better for diverse reasons. We have always had a culture where in-person interactions are better for varied purposes as compared to written communication. Written communication does have its fair share of advantages though.

These include the ability to clearly outline everything on paper. At the same time, you can always rephrase, rewrite or edit until you are satisfied with what you are communicating. You can also think more clearly and logically, taking time to examine the points that you cover. Yet, written communication does not have the personal or human aspect that is synonymous with oral communication. It does not convey gestures, emotions, expressions, tone, and other cues that are inextricably linked to oral communication. If you consider communication between a student and teacher, then written communication or notes may help in many ways but actual teaching and face-to-face interaction are always best for understanding.

In a similar vein, oral communication has an instant ability to convey, express, and resolve which is missing in the written realm. Oral communication is also more effective in getting the job done in most cases. People usually tend to rely more on oral communication while deciding. At the same time, written communication is more organized, logical, and detailed for readers to understand. Yet it lacks the speed and fluency of oral communication. I wish to conclude with a regular example- suppose you had to inform your family about your new promotion. Would you write a letter that they would all take turns to read? Or would you rather call everyone and inform them orally about the same? We all know which option is the better one in this regard.

Oral Communication is Better than Written Communication: Sample 2

The essay topic seeks to establish that oral communication is better than written communication. While I strongly agree with the premise, there are some aspects where written communication is clearly a better option. Let us first start with the advantages of oral communication over its written counterpart.

Oral communication helps in instantly expressing and conveying thoughts, ideas, and decisions. It offers faster communication and resolution as per requirements and is more effective in getting things done. It can also captivate or engage people better than the written word. It is the reason why theater or stage performances are considered a superior art form. At the same time, there are several associated facets to oral communication that are missing in written communication. These include communicative gestures, expressions, changes of mood/tone, and other verbal and facial cues for audiences.

Overall, oral communication does hold an edge over written communication owing to these aspects. Yet, written communication is sometimes more effective in logically and neatly conveying a message, expressing an idea, or helping generate more awareness. Taking time to read something that is carefully worded sometimes works better than oral communication, which is more spontaneous and may not be as effective. A proper understanding of several meanings in life comes from the written word. One should also consider the nature of oral communication- words cannot be taken back. Once the quiver is out of the arrow, it generates equal and opposite reactions. Written communication, on the other hand, gives one an opportunity to erase and rewrite things before the final dispatch. With these core points, I rest my case that it is a mixed bag; they equally have their merits and demerits. We should instead aim for a better fusion of both.
