Old vs New SAT Format 2024: Major Changes to Look Out for

Updated on 13 February, 2024

Did you know that the SAT is now digital? The new SAT format has significant changes that were announced in 2023 to improve the test-taking experience of students. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a standardized examination that US universities use for admissions to undergraduate courses. On average, 25,000 Indian students take the SAT annually. If you are an aspirant, learn the differences between the old and new SAT format here.

New SAT Format

The new SAT format combines Reading and Writing sections into one as compared to the older version of the test that had separate Reading and Writing, and Language sections. At the same time, in the digital SAT format, you can expect 98 questions in total, while the old SAT format had 154 questions. An embedded graphing calculator is also provided for the maths section in the test application, although students can bring their own calculators to the exam centers.

What Has Changed in SAT

Here are some of the major changes in the SAT exam:

  • Shorter duration: The duration of the test is now shorter at 2 hours and 14 minutes, and the digital test is now being taken by students, with effect from March 2023, at international test centers. The digital SAT can be taken at US test centers and schools in Spring 2024.
  • Tailored testing experience: The digital SAT uses a multi-stage adaptive testing system. Each section will be divided into two modules. For the first module, you will receive a mixed bag with questions of various difficulty levels. However, in the second module, the questions will be either more or less difficult based on your performance in the first module. This leads to accurate assessment in a shorter period of time and also provides a more tailored experience to students.
  • Faster results: With the digital SAT, you can also get the results faster in just a few days instead of weeks.
  • More secure: The digital format enables the exam providers to create a unique test for each student. Thus, preventing the sharing of answers.
  • Tools to manage time: The digital format has several tools, such as calculators, reference sheets, and testing timers. Students can also mark answers for review and annotate the text. This allows them to track their progress better and manage time effectively.

  • The reading and writing sections will continue to assess your understanding of the English language, structure formation, and punctuation.
