Q. What month does university start in Australia?

In Australia, the start of university study depends on each institution's individual academic calendar. Generally, the academic year is divided into two main semesters: Semester 1 and Semester 2. Semester 1 at many universities opens up in late February or early March, which is the start of the academic year. This is the major intake period for many undergraduate and postgraduate programs, giving students who want to plunge into their studies a brand new start.

For those who may miss Semester 1 or prefer a later start, Semester 2 is another shot for you. Starting in late July or early August, Semester 2 is the semester that allows students to start university courses halfway through the academic year. It is also worth remembering that not all programs can be started at the mid-year date. Students will need to go through their own institution's specific academic calendar for accurate information.

Besides the usual two-semester system, a few Australian universities use a trimester model. Divided by three trimesters, the academic year is thus further diversified in terms of start times for courses. Trimester I often coincides with Semester 1, starting around February, while Trimester 2 is synonymous with Semester 2, beginning in July. The third trimester, less common than the first two, usually begins in November or December. This provides an alternate starting date for some programs of study.

Start dates may vary from program to program, so prospective students must carefully compare the academic calendar of the university with that of their selected programs. The result is more accurate planning and a smooth transfer into the Australian university environment. The start of Semester 1 or the mid-year entry point to studies in Semester 2, whichever period you chose, each provides distinctive opportunities for development and exploration.
