Q. How long can I stay in Canada after my studies?

Studying in Canada has emerged as a profitable option for students from other countries. International students can apply for a post-study work permit, which permits them to remain in Canada after completing their program or course.

There are two qualifying requirements that one must meet to remain in Canada after completing education. The student must either obtain notification that they are qualified to receive a graduate degree from their particular institute or they must graduate from an institution of higher learning that is a DLI (Designated Learning Institute).

Staying after completing a Post – Graduate course

The answer to how long foreign students may remain in Canada after graduating depends entirely on how long the course takes. If the program lasts more than eight months, you can also obtain a work permit in Canada after receiving your diploma.

One of the best resources the Canadian government offers international students is a post-study work permit, which offers a great chance to obtain real-world work experience.

Before concluding, certain rules and regulations must be looked into if one decides to stay in Canada in the long run.

  • Applying for a permanent residence permit under the Canadian Experience Class system is possible if you have finished a two-year course from a recognized Canadian institution and one year of work experience in any skilled position.
  • Moreover, you may be deemed ineligible for permanent residency under the Provincial Nominee Program, another mechanism.
  • With effect from November 2016, a point system has been incorporated into the new regulation. This system states that a foreign student who completes a full-time, one- to two-year degree program following secondary education can receive fifteen points.
