Q. How many universities are in the USA?

The U.S. has a university system of great diversity and depth, with many universities offering programs ranging from associate to doctoral degrees in dozens of branches of study. According to the most recent figures, there are nearly 4,000 degree-granting institutions in the United States. Such institutions, including universities, colleges, and community college schools of higher education, establish the reputation for academic preeminence and innovation that characterizes their country.

In the U.S., ways of classifying universities are varied, with institutions belonging to different categories according to their focus and whether they issue degrees. There are three major categories: research universities, liberal arts colleges, and community colleges. The research universities, like Harvard and Stanford, are strong in both teaching and research programs extending from undergraduate right through to doctoral level. Liberal arts colleges, such as Williams College and Amherst College, stress a liberal education. Community colleges, such as Montgomery College and Santa Monica College, are usually two-year schools offering associate degrees that provide a cheaper point of entry to higher education.

The number and diversity of universities in the U.S. are indicative of America's belief that education must be available to a wide variety of students at an adequate level, even affordable price. These organizations play a critical role in research, technological innovation, and the training of an expert labor force. As Such, American higher education is known among students and educational administrators world wide for the quality of its instruction in all areas.

To sum up, the United States has almost 4000 universities with a variety of educational opportunities and experiences. This broad higher education environment reflects the dedication of this nation to disseminating knowledge, stimulating innovation, and training a talented workforce.
