Lewis Institute and Armour Institute merged to form Illinois Tech in 1940. Established in 1895 by the estate of hardware businessman and investor Allen C. Lewis, the Lewis Institute was situated on Chicago's West Side and provided science and engineering courses in addition to liberal arts courses for both genders.
