The university admitted its first black students in 1959, five years after the Supreme Court of the United States ruled in Brown v. Board of Education that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional. At the period, racial segregation was typical throughout the South. They were accepted into Memphis State University and became known as "The Memphis State Eight." They were the subject of harsh criticism from a sizable portion of the local public as well as intense media scrutiny due to their presence on campus. History of University of Prince Edward Island
Prince of Wales College (founded in 1834) and Saint Dunstan's University (founded in 1855), the University of Prince Edward Island's founding institutions, are the source of the university's illustrious academic history, which dates back to the early 1800s. One university was established in the province in 1969 as a result of the University Act, which was passed by the Prince Edward Island government led by Premier Alex B. Campbell.
