The UNBC Act was formally passed by the BC legislative assembly in June 1990, establishing UNBC. The idea of a northern university dates even further back, to the 1960s, when Ray Williston, the then-MLA, reserved the land that is now home to UNBC's Prince George campus as a university reserve. 

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited Prince George on August 17, 1994, to mark the university's official opening.
