History of Brown University

The third institution in New England and the sixth in Colonial America, Brown University was established in 1764. A monument to the open-mindedness that still characterises Brown even now is the fact that Brown was the first Ivy League university to welcome students of any religious affiliation.

In 1888, the first master's degrees were awarded, and in 1889, the first doctorates. A graduating cohort of fifty-eight students received the first medical degrees of the contemporary period in 1975. Currently, Brown's Alpert Medical School grants about 100 MD degrees each year.
