Private university Drake University was established in 1881. There are 2,902 undergraduate students enrolled in total (fall 2021), the campus spans 150 acres, and the location is a city. The Biology Department has a wide array of tools and resources that can be used for faculty and student research as well as teaching. All of these resources and cutting-edge research tools are designed for undergraduate use, giving students a hands-on introduction to the contemporary methods and technologies used in biological research. Old Main, the earliest permanent structure, was finished in 1883. Levitt Hall, Sheslow Auditorium, Old Main, which once housed administrative offices, is still a significant building on campus. It has also hosted numerous presidential debates and other events. Chester C. Cole, who served on the Iowa Supreme Court from 1864 to 1876, founded the university's law school in 1865, making it the second-oldest law school in the nation west of the Mississippi River after Saint Louis University School of Law. The first foreigners to enroll at Drake were nationals of China, Persia, Armenia, and Japan in 1886. On June 16, 1908, the initial campus library was inaugurated. The institution permitted social fraternities to wear Greek letter symbols and join with the university in 1920 as a result of a housing crisis.
