History of Illinois Institute of Technology
Lewis Institute and Armour Institute merged to form Illinois Tech in 1940. Established in 1895 by the estate of hardware businessman and investor Allen C. Lewis, the Lewis Institute was situated on Chicago's West Side and provided science and engineering courses in addition to liberal arts courses for both genders. On October 26, 1939, the trustees of Armour and Lewis colleges met separately and decided to combine the two institutions. The merger was formally established on April 23, 1940, by a Cook County circuit court ruling.

English Language Requirements:
Unless they are exempt, all international applicants seeking degrees must provide the results of an approved test as proof of their English language competency. Direct submission of the test results from the testing organization is necessary. The planned admission period shall begin no later than two years from the date on the scores. The tests that are acceptable and the related minimum scores are shown below. If a student is not admitted on a limited basis and is not proficient in English, they will have to take the English as a Second Language Placement Test (EPT) before they may enroll at Illinois.
High school transcripts: Students must bring at least one original or certified copy of their high school diploma and transcripts when they enroll at Illinois Tech. Official six-copy copies are advised. Transcripts from any university courses a student has taken are also necessary.
