The University of Texas Rio Grande is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges to grant master's. Baccalaureate, specialist and doctoral degrees. All the nursing programmes are accredited by the Texas Board of Nursing. Business and Entrepreneurship is accredited by AACSB and CCNE accredited agencies given accreditation to The School of Nursing. The University of Texas Rio Grande was developed by the Texas Legislature in 2013 after the consolidation of the University of Texas-Pan American and Texas Southmost College. The former names were Texas Southmost College and Edinburgh College. This university enrolled its first class in the fall of 2015 and the school of medicine opened in 2016. This university is ranked 36 in Top Performers on Social Mobility and 156 in Top Public Schools.

Half of the applicants admitted to this university have an SAT score between 930 and 1120 or an ACT score of 16 and 21. On the other hand, one-quarter of the admitted students achieved scores above these ranges and one-quarter scored below these ranges.
