University of Michigan Admission Requirements for Students

Here's what you need to know about University of Michigan admission requirements:

Undergraduate Admission Requirements

If a student applies before receiving their high school diploma, they will be considered first-year students and must meet the following requirements by the deadline:

  • a completed Common Application with a $75 application fee payment; 
  • High school transcript (extra requirements vary by country); 
  • School Report through the Common Application; 
  • one teacher evaluation (from a core academic teacher or another non-relative who can speak directly to the student's academic aptitude, potential, and classroom performance); 
  • if available, the student's SAT or ACT score; 
  • scores from TOEFL, IELTS, MET, etc. (for non-native English speakers); 
  • official college transcripts (for high school students who are dual enrolled in a college or university; additional requirements by country)

Postgraduate Admission Requirements

By the application dates , all materials should be submitted. Applications that are submitted after the deadlines will not have as much of an advantage when they are evaluated. Following are the requirements for postgraduate admission at U-M:

  • A bachelor's degree in the United States equivalent to an undergraduate degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics
  • GPA for the undergraduate degree was 3.5 out of 4.0.
  • scores on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in all three exam categories that are at least in the 50 percentile
  • Three recommendation letters 
  • Research experience (particularly crucial for applicants to PhD programs)
  • English Language Proficiency Test results (for candidates whose native language is not English)

English Requirements:

You must take the English proficiency test and obtain a passing score in one of the following acceptable ranges if English is your second language:

  • TOEFL (iBT): 100 range, with section scores of 21+ in speaking and writing and 23+ in listening and reading (includes the Home Edition and Paper Edition).
  • TOEFL Essentials: 10 range with scores in the part of 10+
  • IELTS/IELTS Indicator: section scores 6.5+ and a range of 7.0
  • ECPE: Certificate with a minimum of a C in each section
  • CAE (C1 Advanced): 185, with each section requiring a minimum of 180+ points (CEFR C1)
  • CPE: Pass with a B in CPE (C2 Proficiency) (CEFR C1)
  • PTE Academic: 68, having a strong performance in every section.
  • MET: 64, with section scores exceeding 59 (digital 4-skill MET).

The Documents Required:

This indicates that there isn't a deadline for applications. It is advised that all applicants finish the admissions process a minimum of one month before the commencement of their first semester to accommodate placement tests, orientation, and financial aid and scholarship evaluations

The graduate programs at UM-Flint assist in realizing your goals, whether you're seeking a graduate degree to further your job or to envision a different future for yourself. Every graduate school has its own requirements for application materials as well as admissions criteria and procedures.
