• Step 1: Select the desired cell you want to copy from. In this case, select cell A2, as shown in the picture.

• Step 2: Go to the Home tab, in the Clipboard group and select Format Painter. You will see that the selected cell will transform into a dashed border, and the cursor into a plus and a paintbrush, like in the picture.

• Step 3: Select the desired cell you want to apply the same formatting, like in C2 as shown in the picture. You can see that the background color, the border, and the currency format have all been copied from cell A2 to cell C2.

• Step 4: Simply click twice on the Format Painter button to apply identical styling to many cells.

• Step 5: To exit Format Painter mode, either hit Esc or press the Format Painter symbol once more.

• Copy Formatting of One Column to Another Row-wiseIf you wish to replicate the full column's formatting to another, first hit the headline of the chosen column, then the headline of the one to which it should be copied.

Example 1: Applying Formatting to an Extended Dataset

If you are integrating an additional column into an existing dataset, you can employ the same formatting. First, choose the cells in the old column, then use the Format Painter feature to apply formatting to the fresh column.

Example 2: Conditional Formatting 

Using Format Painter to copy conditional formatting saves a lot of time and speeds up my work. As you know, conditional formatting helps to incorporate multiple rules into a particular dataset. But doing it all over again for different datasets can be a tedious job. 

For instance, we have a dataset of students’ marks. The marks less than 25 are marked in red and more than 60 are marked in blue. Now, if I desire to add a new subject, let’s say, Geography (as shown below). Now, instead of again using conditional formatting, you can simply choose the column of any one of the subjects, click on the Format Painter, and then select Geography, to copy the formatting.
