GRE Exam Fees for Registration in 2025

The GRE Registration Fees in 2025 have been set at a standardized cost from 2024. You can register yourself through the ETS portal. There’s no specific GRE exam date in a year, rather multiple dates, which you can choose the one that suits you best.

The GRE general test, which is for the assessment of general skills in students like verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing, is essential for admissions in Graduate programs.

On the other hand, the subject test focuses on skills in specific academic areas like Physics, Mathematics or Psychology, to showcase expertise in a particular area. It is attended for admissions in STEM graduate or PhD programs.

Below given table shows the cost of both General fees as well as Subject Fees in 2025.

Test Type

Fee in INR

GRE General Test 22,000
GRE Subject Test 14,500

You can also take the test from home also. You just need to select “GRE Test Home” mode and date and time. Your exam will be scheduled on that same day. The fee is also the same as that for the test centre.

Registration Fees (Including Taxes)

While you pay your registration fee, you’ll be charged 18% GST + Foreign Currency Markup or DCC costs which is deducted by your bank.

On the base charges (USD 220 or INR 19,036), you’ll be charged 18% GST (i.e. INR 3,427) and assume Bank cuts 2% fees on the base charge (i.e. INR 381). So, total cost will be 19,036 + 3,427 + 381 = INR 22,844.

This fees is approximate and is subject to change since some banks charge no markup fees.

GRE Exam Fees: Additional Costs

There are some additional hidden costs that suddenly pop up when the exam is near. Some students need extra services after booking their test, like changing centres or sending more score reports. These services have extra charges. Check the table below:

Change Test Centre INR 5,000
Extra Score Report INR 2,900

Score Reinstatement INR 5,000
Returned Payment Fee INR 2,900

These fees are not mandatory. If you follow the guidelines correctly or no emergency comes to you, you don’t need these.

By chance you miss the deadline, you are not eligible for the refund. The refunded fees will be sent back to the bank account you used for fee transaction.

GRE Exam Fees Reduction and Waivers

ETS’s Fee Reduction Program can cut the GRE fee by 50% for eligible students. Although the program is US-centric, international students (including Indians) may sometimes qualify through partner institutions or NGOs that distribute vouchers.

What you typically need:

  • Proof of financial need (income certificates, scholarship letters etc.).
  • Advance planning - vouchers are limited and take time to process.
  • Keep in mind: The voucher usually applies to the base test fee, not reschedules, extra score reports or FX costs.
