As the name suggests, a dual axis chart is a chart with two vertical axes. These charts are useful when you want to explore the relationship between two or more measures with different scales.
In the next video, Sean will demonstrate how a dual axis chart is created.
As you learned, to create a dual axis chart, you need to first drag two continuous variables and a discrete variable into the workspace. Then, select the variable on the top and select the “dual axis” option. Finally, use the marks card to select the type of chart you want.
In the video, Sean performed an additional step wherein he synced both the axes. Why is syncing the axes important? Syncing ensures that the scale of both the graphs becomes the same. By doing this, you ensure that the representation is proportional to the scale. In the visualization that Sean created before syncing, it looked like some products had a profit of about 40% of the revenue, which is absurd.
In the next segment, you will learn a critical skill in Tableau: creating custom variables.
